1. Material Characteristics and Typical Applications of SCM420

SCM420 is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel. Characterized primarily by its suitability for carburizing and quenching—combined with high toughness—it is widely utilized in load-bearing and wear-resistant components such as gears, shafts, fasteners, and mold inserts.

Primary Applications:

  • Automotive & Machinery Industry: Gears, transmission shafts, camshafts, connecting rods, bolts.
  • Mold Industry: Mold guide pillars, ejector pins, inserts, guide bushings.
  • Petrochemical Industry: High-temperature fasteners, piping fittings.

Key Characteristics:

After Quenching and Tempering: High strength, excellent toughness, and superior fatigue resistance.

2. Oil Quenching Process

Process

  1. Furnace Loading: Ensure workpieces are clean and arranged with adequate spacing; avoid stacking.
  2. Vacuum Evacuation: Evacuate the furnace chamber to ≤10 Pa to prevent oxidation and decarburization.
  3. Temperature: Typically around 880°C (austenitizing temperature). The holding time is determined based on the effective thickness of the workpiece, generally set at 1–2 minutes per millimeter, to ensure thorough heating of the core and uniform composition.

Vacuum Oil Quenching:

  1. Quenching Medium: Fast-quenching oil; oil temperature maintained at 60–80°C with vigorous agitation.
  2. Operation: Rapidly open the oil-quenching gate and immerse the workpieces into the oil. Remove the workpieces from the oil once they have cooled to below 150°C (to prevent cracking).
  3. Tempering: Tempering must be performed promptly after quenching. Common tempering temperatures are 150–200°C (low-temperature tempering) or 540–680°C (high-temperature tempering), depending on the specific application.

3. Advantages of Vacuum Oil Quenching

  • No oxidation, no decarburization, bright surface finish
  • Minimal deformation; suitable for precision components
  • Stable quality; suitable for mass production
  • Environmentally friendly and safe
