Vacuum aluminum brazing is a highly advanced and crucial metal joining technology in modern manufacturing. The filler metal is heated to melt, and capillary action is used to join two pieces of aluminum together.

Oxide Film Removal and the Role of Magnesium

Aluminum is a very reactive metal, always covered with a dense film of alumina. This film has an extremely high melting point (approximately 2050°C), while aluminum itself melts at around 660°C. In a vacuum furnace, heating and the addition of trace amounts of magnesium (Mg) as a deoxidizing agent are used. The magnesium evaporates at high temperatures, breaking down and peeling away the oxide film on the aluminum surface, allowing the filler metal to smoothly wet the base metal. Removing air ensures that the aluminum does not react with oxygen again during the welding process.
