Then rapid cooling in the steel immersed in water or oil, austenite into martensite. Martensite has the highest hardness as compared to other tissues in steel. The purpose of the quenching of the steel is to achieve a high hardness and then tempering at an appropriate temperature to give the workpiece the desired properties in order to have its tissues fully or largely transformed into martensite.
