Discharge plasma sintering (SPS) is a kind of fast, low temperature, energy saving, environmental protection material preparation technology, can be used for the preparation of metals, ceramics, nano materials, amorphous materials, composite materials, gradient materials, ceramic, metal, ceramic, intermetallic compounds, composites nanomaterials and functional materials, etc. The most studied are functional materials, which include thermoelectric materials, magnetic materials, functional gradient materials, composite functional materials and nano-functional materials. The preparation of amorphous alloy, shape memory alloy and diamond in SPS has been tried.
The sintering process can be shortened to a few minutes because the workpiece is directly heated by the dc current pulse. By using dc short pulse, the sintering activity of many materials increases, and the process of particle contact points such as joule heating, plasma generation and electric migration. Therefore, compared with the traditional hot pressing and sintering process, the sintering temperature and mold pressure of SPS are much lower than those of the previous two.
