The vacuum carbonitriding technology retains the basic characteristics of the gas carbonitriding, but no oxygen medium exists in the permeating gas, and the grain boundary oxide layer can be eliminated in the infiltration layer. It is obvious that there is a low amount of osmotic gas and a significant reduction in emissions.

During the vacuum carbonitriding, the surface performance of the workpiece can be improved obviously due to the infiltration of nitrogen.

(1) less than the carburizing temperature, the workpiece quenching distortion is obviously reduced and the precision is improved.

(2) increase of workpiece hardenability, even if carbon steel can be quenched in a vacuum furnace, the hardness is increased obviously, so that cheap carbon steel can achieve the performance of alloy steel.

(3) anti-tempering softening temperature increases.

(4) wear resistance and fatigue strength performance improvement.

(5)corrosion resistance enhancement. Due to the lack of oxygen medium in the atmosphere, the crystal boundary oxide layer was eliminated in the permeability layer, and the permeability was ensured. At the same time, due to the controllable gas volume of the medium, it can save the resources and reduce the carbon and exhaust emission significantly, which belongs to the clean production technology.
